For our first lecture of the new NIAAS season, it’s an honour to be saying, our first speaker of the 2024/2025 season is Philip Matchett and the title of my talk is How To Build An Observatory (Nearly)!
This lecture will be on Monday 2nd September 2024, starting at 8pm sharp in our usual venue of Ballyclare High School Lecture Theatre.
About the talk: As many of you know, astronomy has been a large part of my life and one of my goals has always been to have my own observatory. This had always been a bit of a pipe dream, as you know other things always get in the way, life! Things changed for me when I received an email from a lady in Scotland in June 2021.
This talk tells that story, and how Whinpark Observatory is nearing completion. You may have read my journey on this site, but I have more to show you and will bring you all right up to date on the build!
About Philip: I’m an Electrical Engineer who has worked mostly in the packaging industry, however I’m now designing electric boats! I’ve been a committee member of the NIAAS for over 20 years and have held nearly every position including Chairman. You may have heard me giving talks at our outreach events, I’m normally backup if the weather doesn’t play ball, last season that was at all our events!
I hope to see you all at the meeting!
As usual, tea, coffee, biscuits and good chat will be available after the lecture!
